St. Louis Brewery, which operates Schlafly Beer, is planning to build an additional brewery in the metropolitan area, possibly in north St. Louis County or north St. Louis city.
Dan Kopman, who co-founded the craft brewer in 1991, said Thursday that the company has outgrown its Bottleworks location in Maplewood, where it currently brews the majority of its beer.
The company can now brew nearly 50,000 barrels a year, Kopman said. This expansion could boost that figure to 100,000 to 150,000, he said. State figures show St. Louis Brewery sold 1,135,777 gallons of beer in fiscal year 2013. A barrel has roughly 31.5 gallons of beer.
“Demand for our beers has exceeded expectations,” Kopman said.
